Miss Edna's Kids

Over the past few months, we've been spending all the spare time we have in the studio discovering, writing and re-writing our songs for the 2nd album.  This means no time for shows.  But when our friend Sharon reached out and asked if we could play a private function to support Miss Edna's kids, a chairty that supports families in need, well, we couldn't refuse!  We met Sharon a couple of years ago at a community festival we were playing, and she was our most enthusiastic audience member that day (and enthusiastic audience members are extremely fun to play for!!)  We're happy to be a part of this upcoming event!  ~Jill

Songwriting...

Songwriting is such an unpredictable endeavor.  Sometimes songs seem to write themselves and take no time- other times we'll work for months to transform and refine ideas.

Lately we've been really diligent about recording every song idea that we get, no matter how simple it may seem.  Thanks to a really easy to use recording device (because if it's complicated I won't use it!) we now have many idea snippets recorded to refer to.  Not all are great, of course, and we do a fair amount of editing- but you never know when the smallest guitar riff or melody may come in handy.

What I'm learning is that even the simplest of melodies that I hear upon waking up, or find myself humming absentmindedly, has the potential to be layered and built upon until it becomes a full song.  It's so fun to bring a melody to Bruce or Connor and see what their ideas they add to it.  The ambient sounds that Bruce is able to create never cease to give me goosebumps. Connor adds his bass line to drive and build momentum and structure.

Sometimes the initial recordings of our "jam" sessions of just playing around seem to have a magic that can't be replicated!  I love having these.  One recent freshly written song has our 6 year old daughter Skyler singing along to chorus in the initial 'rough draft' recording.  No matter how much time is spent to achieve a mastered studio product, I think these rough recordings will often remain my personal favorites.

Peace of Art, Del Norte

We had a great show down in the beautiful San Luis Valley last weekend.  Our good friends Kim & Mike own the happenin' place in Del Norte, Colorado- a fantastic cafe called the Peace of Art.  They always hook us up with a great place to stay and yummy organic food while we're there!  Bruce and I played an acoustic show to open up their courtyard for the summer season.  Played and sang for a fantastic group of people on a cold summer night at 8,000 feet!  We had fun playing as a couple, Bruce hooked up his acoustic guitar to some sweet delay and effects pedals.  Kim posted some photos on facebook of the evening.  Thanks as always Del Norte!
