Songwriting is such an unpredictable endeavor. Sometimes songs seem to write themselves and take no time- other times we'll work for months to transform and refine ideas.
Lately we've been really diligent about recording every song idea that we get, no matter how simple it may seem. Thanks to a really easy to use recording device (because if it's complicated I won't use it!) we now have many idea snippets recorded to refer to. Not all are great, of course, and we do a fair amount of editing- but you never know when the smallest guitar riff or melody may come in handy.
What I'm learning is that even the simplest of melodies that I hear upon waking up, or find myself humming absentmindedly, has the potential to be layered and built upon until it becomes a full song. It's so fun to bring a melody to Bruce or Connor and see what their ideas they add to it. The ambient sounds that Bruce is able to create never cease to give me goosebumps. Connor adds his bass line to drive and build momentum and structure.
Sometimes the initial recordings of our "jam" sessions of just playing around seem to have a magic that can't be replicated! I love having these. One recent freshly written song has our 6 year old daughter Skyler singing along to chorus in the initial 'rough draft' recording. No matter how much time is spent to achieve a mastered studio product, I think these rough recordings will often remain my personal favorites.
